The island of Thasos is in Northern Greece, off the coast of Eastern Macedonia. Its coastline stretches for 115 km. and its surface area is 378.84 sq. km. It is 18 nautical miles from Kavala and only six from Keramoti and Kavala Airport. The island is covered in vegetation, and timber is one of the main sources of income for the inhabitants, as are the marble quarries, tourism, olive oil, olives, honey and so on. Olive, pine, plane, fir, lime, cypress and dogwood trees, as well as other wild and cultivated varieties, cover the small plains right up to the tops of the mountains. There are about 14,000 residents.
The climate of Thasos is clement: cool in summer and mild in winter. Average annual temperature is 17.2� C., while the average summer temperature (July) is 23.4�.
